ATLANTA -- Pastor Kevin Myers often prays for wisdom and blessings at his Lawrenceville church.
But Monday, Myers asked for God's guidance for an audience that could soon decide the future of the state.
The 12 Stone Church senior pastor opened the 2012 session of the state Senate Monday with a prayer for wisdom and humility.
"I would be honored to pray for God's favor over each of you ... for the whole assembly as we open a new year, for the character, the courage, the wisdom to keep promises amidst great pressure," Myers, said reading from the Book of Psalms... Read more. |

BUFORD -- The last decade has been tough for Renee Unterman. A long, public divorce, marked by a domestic dispute that caused her to lose custody of her daughter. A battle with depression, including some in-patient care. A car accident that left her son with a broken neck. Then finally the worst tragedy possible, the death of her son.
Through it all, Unterman, a lifelong politician, has continued her role as a state senator, slogging through the rough times and the public glare.
In the past year, though, Unterman has staged a major comeback, accomplishing goals she has worked on for years and gathering accolades along the way.
"I had always been involved in suicide prevention, but I had no idea it would be applicable to my own family," Unterman said of her son Zak's death bringing more purpose to her role in the General Assembly... Read more. |

Debate over the I-85 HOT lanes is again heating up after some state leaders have declared the toll lanes a success.
"I know patience is thin, but I'm pretty confident that this will all get better and everybody will see the value when they see the statistics," said State Senator Jeff Mullis, chairman of the senate transportation committee.
The State Road and Tollway Authority said peak usage has reached nearly 12,000 vehicles which is almost the maximum for the toll lanes.
"I don't believe those numbers. I believe they're skewed," said State Senator Renee Unterman whose district includes Gwinnett County.
Unterman said she continues to hear from angry commuters in the county... Read more and watch video.

I’ve known Mr. Cain for years and find him to be a man of the highest character. He always treats everyone with kindness and respect. These accusations are false. None of these women have provided any evidence to support their accusations. This is nothing more than a distraction to knock Mr. Cain off his message that has been resonating with the people. People want to hear about how we are going to create jobs so they can keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Mr. Cain’s bold “9-9-9 Plan” will get this economy going again and create the jobs that Americans, especially Georgians, are demanding. We need a man of Mr. Cain’s character and leadership abilities to get Washington out of the way of job creators so we can get people back to work and get this country out of its $15 trillion debt... LAWRENCEVILLE -- In 22 years of elected office, Sen. Renee Unterman has never gotten so many calls from incensed constituents. But even the senator is frustrated and worried she has no where to turn to solve the traffic nightmare that became worse when toll lanes opened on Interstate 85 earlier this month.
Unterman was livid when the State Road and Tollway Authority canceled a meeting to discuss the controversial lanes last week. She said officials said they wanted to wait until the project had been in place for three months, but a SRTA spokeswoman said the organization thought a representative from the Georgia Department of Transportation would answer Unterman's questions.
"We are the people's voice," Unterman said of legislators. "I'm not going to sit back and do nothing."
She said officials cited a toll project in Fort Lauderdale where the traffic snarls and upheaval were settled in three months, but Unterman said that if the problems persist into the new year, she will spend every day at the Senate well speaking out... Read more. |

It was a hot day in the parking lot of BJ’s Wholesale Club in Conyers last Thursday, but we forgot all about that as the spirit of community filled the air. As tunes cranked from Project 9-6-1, and the students from Rockdale County’s Hightower Trail Elementary School and Georgia State Sen. Renee Unterman showed up, we couldn’t help but feel happy...
